How did the printer come about?

In 1822, a British mathematician and inventor named Charles Babbage first envisioned an automatic machine to process data.

This device would not materialize, but the electric printer for computers was created in the late 19th century.

Later on, innovated it with the application of dot matrix printing technology- where texts can be reproduced- along with color copiers invented by Canon’s company in 1959.

In 1973, Xerox PARC developed color photocopier technology, making major changes due to their inventions.

Nowadays, one industry focused on personal reproduction machines seeks new low-cost technologies like continuous inkjet printers, so they’re ‘easier’ and cheaper than ever before – which was made possible thanks to Xerox scientists who were thinking ahead with each invention!.

Who invented the printer, and in what year?

The credit for the invention of the printer does not belong to one person. Many people have contributed ideas and mechanisms throughout history that consolidated printers we use today.

These include Charles Babbage, who devised a printing mechanism in 1840. However, he was never able to produce it with lines and planes.

The American multinational company International Business Machines (IBM) created the printer with matrix technology in 1957. Started IBM’s line of matrix printers.

The IBM 1403 printer has been released, making this device one of the computers’ tools in their day-to-day operations.

Several features characterize this printer:

  • The IBM printer had several versions in its creation process. In the beginning, they used tape that was pressed by hammers; then, they used a printing train.
  • The improvement in IBM printers was remarkable in terms of operability. IMB printers went from 600 lines per minute to 1,400 lines per minute. According to calculations that have to do with the performance of printers, the IBM 1403 came to print a page every 3 seconds. The 1,400 lines spanned 23 pages, printed in a record 3 minutes.
  • Included new symbols in the print train. Previously, scientists used symbols to suppress the non-existent ones, as happened with the plus and percent signs.
  • This printer allowed people to use different types and sizes of paper.
  • In addition, the 1403 printer stood out in the history of technology and was a protagonist in one of Stanley Kubrick’s most famous films titled Dr. Strangelove.
  • The 1403 printer has been part of history, as it has been able to reproduce works of art, one of which has been Leonardo Da Vinci’s work of art, the Mona Lisa.
  • While the IBM 1403 printer represented a place in technology culture, it also had special use in the arts. The sound produced by the hammers was used to compose musical pieces.

The world’s first mini-printer
